“Prime Minister Narendra Modi urges swift de-escalation following United States airstrikes on Iran’s Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan nuclear facilities.”

“India and Iran share a longstanding strategic partnership, and both nations have been in close and continuous consultation to safeguard the well-being of Indian nationals residing in Iran, especially in light of the escalating conflict in West Asia as of 13th June.”

Hours after the United States carried out strikes on three key nuclear establishments in Iran, the Honourable Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, on Sunday, the 22nd of June, 2025, held a telephonic conversation with the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian. During the discussion, the Prime Minister earnestly appealed for an “immediate de-escalation” of tensions. This marks the first official statement from India—an enduring strategic partner of Iran—amidst the rapidly evolving situation in West Asia, which intensified from the 13th of June.

“Had a detailed conversation with His Excellency Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian, President of the Islamic Republic of Iran. We exchanged views on the prevailing circumstances in the region. I conveyed India’s deep concern regarding the recent escalation and reiterated our steadfast call for restraint, dialogue, and diplomacy. We underscored the importance of restoring peace, stability, and security in the region at the earliest,” stated Prime Minister Modi in an official communication following the call.

India and Iran continue to engage in close and constructive dialogue on matters of mutual interest, both bilaterally and on multilateral platforms. Notably, New Delhi played host to His Excellency Seyed Abbas Araghchi, the Honourable Foreign Minister of Iran, on the 7th of May, 2025, for the 20th session of the Joint Commission Meeting between the two nations.
