Putin tells Iran’s FM that aggression against Iran was baseless

On June 23, 2025, during discussions in Moscow, His Excellency President Vladimir Putin of the Russian Federation conveyed to the Honorable Abbas Araqchi, Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic of Iran, that acts of aggression against Iran lacked justification. President Putin affirmed Russia’s readiness to extend support to the Iranian populace.

Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov informed the press that the military actions undertaken by the United States had exacerbated the conflict, drawing additional parties into the fray and precipitating a heightened cycle of escalation. He noted that the extent of damage to Iran’s nuclear facilities remained uncertain, as did the potential for radiological hazards. Mr. Peskov expressed grave concern regarding the situation in Iran following the strikes.

The Russian Federation, having formalized a strategic partnership agreement with Iran in January 2025—absent a mutual defense provision—had previously cautioned that U.S. military intervention risked destabilizing the broader region, potentially plunging it into profound crisis. Mr. Peskov clarified that President Donald J. Trump of the United States had engaged in general discussions with President Putin regarding possible U.S. military involvement but had not provided detailed advance notification of the specific strikes.

In response to inquiries about Russia’s subsequent course of action, Mr. Peskov stated that Moscow had proffered its services as a mediator, with further steps contingent upon the expressed needs of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
